Why do I need to change my air filter?Updated a month ago

Short Answer:

Eventually, after about 2-3 months, the air filter will clog with so much gunk (after capturing so many particles and contaminants) that it must be replaced in order to maintain proper airflow in your HVAC unit. Just think about how hard it is to breathe when you're nose is stuffy!

Replacing your filter on a regular and consistent basis:

  • Keeps your home air clean
  • Ensures your HVAC system is running properly and efficiently
  • Helps you save 5-15% on your monthly energy bills

Long answer:

If your filter is not replaced, it will clog with so much particle gunk that not even air will be able to pass through it. And it will look something like this:

Clean filter, Dirty filter (before and after)This isn't great for your health and wallet for three reasons:

1) Dirty Air: If air cannot be filtered because of a clogged, unchanged filter, it means that air is not getting cleaned. And with air quality already being 2-5x worse indoors than outdoors, a dirty filter will only worsen your home air and do your lungs no favors.

2) Increase in Energy Costs: When airflow is restricted by a clogged filter, your HVAC system essentially stops breathing properly (just imagine trying to breathe when your nose is stuffy!). As your HVAC works harder to pass air through an unchanged filter, the motor increases its energy usage, causing your energy bills to go up. According to the US Department of Energy, replacing your filter on time can save you between 5-15% a month on your energy bills.

3) Higher Risk of Costly HVAC Damage: if your filter is left unchanged for way too long, the motor on your HVAC system will work so hard that it actually risks damaging itself. Not only are HVAC repairs very expensive (especially when they are unplanned), but can you imagine what would happen if it broke down in the summer or winter when you use it most? 😭

Overall, a dirty filter can be a good thing because it means that the product is working! It just can’t be left there for long. And that’s what we’re here for… when you buy filters from Windmill, we’ll send you free text reminders so you have one less house chore to worry about.
